Under the new initiative of the Department of Education (DepEd), active shooter drills have been launched to prepare students, teachers, and staff for such situations.
According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, this type of incident highlights the importance of awareness and rapid response, as these events happen very quickly. The agency admitted that despite bag inspections, utilizing metal detectors, and deployment of security guards in schools, weapons can still be snuck and concealed. Thus, there is a need to find more creative ways to strengthen security.
Following the kickoff at Manila Science High School, the active shooter drill is expected to be integrated into the quarterly emergency drills conducted in schools, alongside earthquake and fire drills.
In the coming days, DepEd targets to roll out this kind of preparations in schools nationwide.
