The successful completion of the Union Water Impounding Dam is expected to bring lasting benefits to farmers in Claveria, Cagayan, by providing year-round irrigation and effective flood control for thousands of hectares of farmland.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said its completion proves that with proper planning and efficient implementation, the government can deliver reliable infrastructure.
The project, which is a joint effort of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), supports the government’s goal to improve flood control, irrigation, and rural development in the region.
President Marcos also proudly shared that the project was completed in just 14 months, a testament to the government’s commitment to efficient and timely infrastructure.
“Ito po ay binubuksan po natin – ito ay para naman maipakita natin, itong project po na ito, nagsimula ito sa termino ko, natapos din sa termino ko,” the President said.
“Fourteen months, zero ito, wala ito. Pero 14 months later, ito na, mayroon na tayo,” he added.
The Union Dam, a weir or low dam, regulates river flow to prevent flooding and provides irrigation to about 3,600 hectares of farmland, benefiting over 1,000 farmers in seven barangays.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) vehemently dismissed the information circulating online that the organization has P15 Billion worth of "ghost projects" that started from 2023 up to present.
"These claims are entirely untrue, insensitive, and obviously made to harm the AFP and its leadership," the AFP claimed in a statement issued on October 10.
Moreover, the AFP is willing to take legal actions against individuals and associations who are spreading misinformation against the institution over the alleged "ghost projects."
AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla in a press briefing on Tuesday, October 14, emphasized that the AFP will not allow these maliicious attacks against their organization.
"We are preparing to file criminal charges against the individuals responsible for creating and propagating this malicious content,” she noted.
The AFP urged netizens to be alert and vigilant when it comes to sharing information especially on social media and other online platforms.
“The AFP urges the public—and especially our partners in the media—to exercise caution and responsibility when consuming and sharing content online. Reckless and unfounded allegations not only harm reputations but also erode trust in institutions whose men and women risk their lives daily to defend and protect our nation,” it says in the statement.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) in a court document dated October 10, rejected the request for interim release of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The document stated that the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I ruled that Duterte “continues to pose a flight risk and detention is necessary to ensure his presence during the pre-trial proceedings and possible trial.”
Therefore, the former president is ordered for ‘continued detention’.
The Chamber further explained that given Duterte’s position as former president of the Republic of the Philippines, he still has political contacts and a network of support including that of his daughter Vice President Sara Duterte which the ICC said “may help him abscond”.
Additionally, the Chamber emphasized that Duterte is facing multiple charges including a number of murders and attempted murders as crimes against humanity which, if convicted at trial for all or part of the charges, “he may receive a lengthy sentence.”
The court ruling was signed by Presiding Judge Iulia Antoanella Motoc together with Judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou, and Judge María del Socorro Flores Liera.
