The successful completion of the Union Water Impounding Dam is expected to bring lasting benefits to farmers in Claveria, Cagayan, by providing year-round irrigation and effective flood control for thousands of hectares of farmland.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said its completion proves that with proper planning and efficient implementation, the government can deliver reliable infrastructure.
The project, which is a joint effort of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), supports the government’s goal to improve flood control, irrigation, and rural development in the region.
President Marcos also proudly shared that the project was completed in just 14 months, a testament to the government’s commitment to efficient and timely infrastructure.
“Ito po ay binubuksan po natin – ito ay para naman maipakita natin, itong project po na ito, nagsimula ito sa termino ko, natapos din sa termino ko,” the President said.
“Fourteen months, zero ito, wala ito. Pero 14 months later, ito na, mayroon na tayo,” he added.
The Union Dam, a weir or low dam, regulates river flow to prevent flooding and provides irrigation to about 3,600 hectares of farmland, benefiting over 1,000 farmers in seven barangays.
