MANILA—The top-seeded BFP Lady Firefighters capitalized on their twice-to-beat advantage, obliterating the DFA Emissaries in a straight-set sweep, 25-9, 26-24, 25-17, during the UNTV Volleyball League Season 4 quarterfinals at the Paco Arena on June 3.

BFP demonstrated absolute dominance in the first and third sets, completely deflating DFA's postseason hopes.

With this decisive victory, the preliminary round leaders officially punch their ticket to the highly anticipated semifinals.

Phanie Adolfo earned Best Player of the Game honors after spearheading the Lady Firefighters' relentless frontline assault.

Adolfo put up a spectacular all-around performance, dropping 15 points anchored on 12 explosive attacks, two blocks, and an ace.

Her elevated play anchored BFP's offense and defense whenever the Emissaries attempted to push back, ensuring the top seeds avoided any potential complications.

"Very happy kasi nagbunga po yung training namin, yung sacrifices namin, sa mga coach namin, sa mga team manager namin na laging binibigay nila lahat para sa bawat isa sa amin, at sa family din namin po," Adolfo expressed in an interview after the match.

BFP now shifts its focus to the next stage of the tournament, as the single round-robin semifinals are scheduled to ignite on June 10.

Conviction of VP Duterte still attainable if Senate weighs evidence, says House prosecutor

House prosecutor and Senior Deputy Majority Leader Lorenz Defensor expressed optimism on June 2, that the Senate can still secure a conviction in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte.

Despite brewing political tensions within the upper chamber, the Iloilo representative emphasized that a successful conviction remains entirely achievable if senator-judges carefully evaluate the facts.

Defensor stressed that the ultimate outcome hinges on a meticulous review of the case rather than pre-existing political alignments.

In an interview, Defensor pointed out that the presentation of evidence before the Senate impeachment court has the power to shift voting patterns.

“I’m optimistic, that if they get to see the evidence before them, baka makumbinsi din ang iba sa kanila. Katulad nung nangyari sa Kongreso na kung kailan lumabas ang ebidensya, maraming marami palang bumoto.” The lawmaker said.

He drew direct parallels to the earlier proceedings in the House of Representatives, noting that initial hesitation among lawmakers rapidly dissolved once concrete findings were brought to light.

According to Defensor, support for the impeachment strengthened significantly as the public and lawmakers alike witnessed the depth of the evidence during the committee hearings.

Reflecting on the early stages of the process, Defensor recalled how uncertainty originally plagued the House Committee on Justice before its hearings began.

Many lawmakers were openly reluctant to pursue the case unless compelling new information emerged.

However, as the evidence mounted, skepticism turned into decisive action, a momentum that the House prosecutor believes can be replicated in the Senate once the formal trial gets underway.

Graft arraignment for Sen. Estrada, Ex-DPWH Chief Bonoan reset due to health, senate duties

The Sandiganbayan anti-graft court on June 2, deferred the scheduled arraignment of Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada and former Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan over graft charges involving alleged flood control anomalies.

Both officials arrived at the Quezon City courthouse prepared for the proceedings before the court granted separate motions for postponement.

The anti-graft court rescheduled the formal reading of charges to Thursday, June 4, 2026. Defense lawyers secured the two-day delay by citing immediate health and official conflicts.

Bonoan’s legal counsel requested the postponement due to concerns over the former Public Works chief's hypertension, while Senator Estrada sought a reset to attend to his pressing legislative duties in the Senate.

The court accepted both justifications, temporarily pausing the high-profile case that probes irregularities in the government's flood mitigation projects.

Democracy under threat: VP Duterte warns against silencing the opposition

Vice President Sara Duterte issued a blistering statement on June 2, warning that Philippine democracy is under severe threat as the administration weaponizes government institutions and public funds against the opposition.

“Nakikita natin kung paano ginagamit ang mga institusyon ng gobyerno at ang pera ng taumbayan laban sa anumang oposisyon.” Vice President Sara Duterte said on his video statement.

Breaking her silence amid her ongoing Senate impeachment trial, Duterte accused those in power of treating critics as enemies and using state machinery to silence dissent rather than addressing urgent national problems.

"A government that fears dissent is not demonstrating strength. It is revealing insecurity," Duterte declared, emphasizing that a healthy democracy requires a free and protected opposition.

Duterte outlined three "disturbing realities" currently gripping the nation: the deliberate diversion of attention away from the ongoing flood control controversy, the blatant disregard for constitutional safeguards to fuel a politically motivated impeachment against her, and a relentless pursuit of power disguised as Charter Change.

“The current state of our nation reveals three disturbing realities: first, the effort to divert attention from legitimate questions surrounding the flood control controversy; second, the willingness to disregard constitutional safeguards in pursuit of a politically motivated impeachment; and third, the relentless pursuit of greater political power under the guise of Charter Change.” VP Duterte emphasized.

She heavily defended the independence of government institutions, asserting that members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives must remain completely free to perform their constitutional duties according to their conscience, entirely unhindered by threats, pressure, or intimidation.

“I have always believed that the independence of our institutions must be protected. This includes not only the Senate and the House of Representatives as institution, but every Senator and member of the house must be free to perform his or her constitutional duty according to conscience, free from threats, pressure, or any form of intimidation.” She said.

The Vice President concluded her address with a sharp reminder that the Filipino people deserve a leadership focused on solving problems, not silencing its critics.

“The Filipino people deserve a government focused on solving problems, not silencing critics; on strengthening institutions, not bending them to political ends; and on serving the nation, not perpetuating power.” The Vice President concluded.

Reaffirming her stance against the current political landscape, Duterte stressed that dissent does not weaken a democracy, but rather, democracy is crippled when those in power become afraid of the people's voices.

The statement signals a widening, volatile rift in the country's top political official as her legal team simultaneously fights to dismiss the historic impeachment charges in the Senate.

Minority senators demand SP Cayetano’s resignation over back-to-back ‘no-show’

June 2, 2026 8:43 PM
PST

PASAY CITY—The Senate minority bloc called for the immediate resignation of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on June 2, following a second consecutive day of canceled plenary sessions due to a missing majority bloc.

Senator Migz Zubiri revealed to reporters that approximately 20 minutes into the scheduled 3:00 p.m. hearing, SP Cayetano called Senate Secretary Jose Luis Montales that no senators from the majority will attend the session.

This marks the second day in a row that majority senators failed to show up, with the initial walkout on June 1 following the voluntary surrender of Senator Jinggoy Estrada to the PNP-CIDG over graft and plunder charges.

Furious over the empty chamber, the minority bloc issued a joint statement slamming the majority's absence as a blatant abandonment of responsibility and a dereliction of duty.

The opposition senators argued that the country's legislative business cannot grind to a halt simply because its presiding officer refuses to lead.

They emphasized that the Senate is an institution meant to serve the Filipino people, not the shifting political convenience of its leadership.

The minority bloc further highlighted that Cayetano directly violated Rule XIV, Section 41 of the Rules of the Senate, which dictates that the Senate President may only postpone a session after consulting both the Majority and Minority Leaders—a protocol they state was completely ignored.

Decrying the incident as a serious disrespect to the institution, the minority senators declared that Cayetano has proven he can no longer function as the leader of the Senate and must step down from his post.
