Amid growing concern over the threat of Super El Niño, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is intensifying its preparations for its expected impact. The preparations include ensuring sufficient funds and food stocks, preparing alternative water sources and cooling areas, and protecting supplies against extreme heat.
The agency reported that it has over P1.4 billion in standby funds for potential needs in response to the El Niño impact. In addition, more than 3.8 million family food packs have been prepositioned in various agency warehouses nationwide. The production for food packs is also continuous to make sure the sufficient supply. The agency is also making preparations to provide water supply for potentially affected communities.
“Aside from the food packs and the ready-to-eat food boxes that we are providing, we are also ensuring na mayroon tayong sapat na maiinom na tubig,” DSWD Asec. Irene Dumlao said
The DSWD is also trying to introduce technologies that may help ensure safe drinking water.
“Nag-i-introduce tayo ng iba pang mga teknolohiya para matiyak na may ligtas na mainom na tubig sa mga areas that are prone to the effects of El Niño,” she said
Aside from food and water supply, the agency is also monitoring the warehouse temperature.
“May mga parameters tayo na sinusunod to make sure that our goods are not spoiled,” Asec. Dumlao said
“There's monitoring of warehouse temperature and pangalawa, nag-i-install din tayo ng mga industrial ceiling fans to also manage the temperature in our warehouses,” she added
Based on the advisory of PAGASA, Super El Niño may persist between September and December 2026.
