Nature trips recommended for holiday breaks

Philippine Psychiatric Association President Dr. Joan Mae Perez-Rifareal recommends nature-based activities for maximizing rest during holidays.

Green environments like parks, forests, riversides, and seasides promote relaxation and lower cortisol levels, the body's stress hormone. Reduced cortisol can boost endorphins, which enhance mood and wellbeing.

She also added that exposure to sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon may help to regulate serotonin.

“Sunlight is also a good precursor or source ng “serotonin”, which is also good para sa ating mood.” she said

Gardening or bonding with your pets is a good alternative for long travels. It is also budget-friendly and practical for those who wants to spend their time at home during holiday break.

DOH urges hospitals to boost vigilance after infant abduction attempts

January 1, 2026 1:05 PM
PST

MANILA, Philippines —Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Ted Herbosa has called on hospitals nationwide to strengthen security measures following two infant abduction incidents in Metro Manila during the December 2025 holiday season.

A newborn was abducted from Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) in Marikina on December 26. The infant was later recovered and returned to the parents.

ARMMC Medical Center Chief II Dr. Imelda Mateo announced the hospital will implement additional security layers, enhanced checking procedures, and stricter validation protocols in emergency rooms to prevent similar incidents.

Days later, an attempted kidnapping occurred at Tondo Medical Center. The suspect was arrested and remains in Philippine National Police custody.

Marikina City Police Station Officer-In-Charge PCol. Jenny Tecson said the Tondo suspect voluntarily admitted to the attempt, citing frustration over a recent miscarriage and pressure from relatives expecting her to return home with a baby.

The DOH reminds to execute the following measures to prevent infant abduction:

  • Strengthen security presence, particularly in emergency rooms
  • Maintain consistent monitoring and install additional CCTV cameras where needed
  • Remain vigilant and question anyone claiming to be medical staff
  • Request valid identification from hospital personnel as proof of employment
  • Insist that newborn screening and procedures be conducted in the mother's room
  • Never allow anyone to take your child without verified authorization

The DOH emphasized that hospitals must prioritize infant security protocols, especially during high-volume periods when staffing and monitoring may be stretched.

3 additional stations for EDSA busway in 2026

December 31, 2025 8:01 PM
PST

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) issued a plan to put additional 3 stations in Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue or EDSA busway. The construction of these stations is expected to take place from the 1st quarter of 2026 until the 4th quarter of the same year.

The additional stations to installed next year will be in Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), Magallanes, and Cubao.

DOTr Undersecretary for Road Infrastructure Mark Steven Pastor explained that these additional stations may help to address public concerns such as the long distance between the  station and the actual destination.

“These three stations are supposedly to address ‘yong mahabang pagitan na walang stop sa busway para mas accessible siya.” he said

EXPLAINED: What to do with the damaged currency

January 1, 2026 1:13 AM
PST

“Ang ating pera ay yaman ng ating bansa,” mentioned on the uploaded video of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

[“Our currency is the wealth of our country.”]

Money serves as the primary means to meet daily needs and expenses. Earning it requires hours of work to pay for electricity, water, internet, groceries, and other essentials, plus savings and personal expenses.

Despite careful handling, unexpected incidents can damage cash stored at home. Fire, termites, or rodents can destroy bills kept in drawers or containers. The BSP classifies such damaged cash as Mutilated Banknotes.

Under BSP Circular No. 829, series of 2014, three criteria determine whether damaged currency holds value and qualifies for replacement:

1. Size - At least 60% of the original surface area must remain intact

2. Signature - The signature of either the BSP Governor or the President of the Philippines must be visible

3. Security thread - The embedded security thread must be present (the blue strip located above the two signatures)

The BSP instructs anyone seeking replacement to visit an authorized bank. These banks transport the damaged currency to the BSP for assessment to determine value and eligibility.

Once the BSP confirms eligibility, they deposit the replacement amount to the authorized bank, which then releases it to the client.

Otherwise, an authorized bank must inform the client regarding the ineligible replacement.
