The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has issued an urgent safety advisory, calling on newsrooms to prioritize the lives of their media practitioners over immediate coverage.
Journalists on the ground are instructed to drop to the floor during active gunfire and seek secure cover before attempting to transmit updates.
As authorities work to neutralize the threat and secure the perimeter, the primary focus remains the safe extraction of the journalists and legislative staff currently sheltering in place.
Gunshots erupted inside the Philippine Senate building at approximately 8:00 PM tonight, May 13, sending the legislative complex into a chaotic security lockdown.
While security personnel immediately ordered the majority of the press corps to evacuate the premises, several media workers remain trapped inside as the situation unfolds.
The NUJP is currently monitoring the crisis, confirming that their Media Safety Office is actively gathering reports to determine the exact location and status of those still caught within the building.
