Senator Rodante Marcoleta released a video statement on Tuesday morning, June 30, denying any wrongdoing and saying the corruption allegations against him have no basis, as he faces a looming plunder case before the Sandiganbayan.
"Ang kasalanan ko lamang po ay 'yung paglingkuran kayo, kung kasalanan pong matatawag 'yan," Marcoleta said.
(My only fault is serving you, if that can even be called a fault.)
The senator said he believes he will be jailed despite maintaining his innocence.
"Kahit po sa mahirap na kalagayan nating ito, mga kababayan, ipinakikiusap ko sa inyong lahat huwag po tayong pumayag na basta-basta na lang nila baluktutin ang katwiran," he said.
(Even in this difficult situation, my countrymen, I am appealing to all of you — let us not allow them to simply bend the truth.)
Marcoleta's statement came as the Office of the Ombudsman prepares to file plunder charges against him before the anti-graft court, in connection with allegations that he failed to declare P75 million in campaign contributions received during the 2025 midterm elections. The case also names former Quezon City Representative Mike Defensor.
The senator, a member of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) and an ally of Vice President Sara Duterte, has previously accused the Ombudsman of orchestrating the case against him to keep him from participating in Duterte's impeachment trial, which begins on July 6.
Thousands of INC members rallied along EDSA and at Liwasang Bonifacio earlier Tuesday, June 30, in support of Marcoleta.
